An extravagant orange bloom is a refreshing contrast to this time of year! Iris is named after the Greek goddess of the rainbow, thanks to its vast array of colour options. This perennial has all the collectable attributes: abundance of colours and forms (there are thousands of bearded irises with new introductions each year), varied bloom times that can stagger over 6-8 weeks, and of course luscious and decadent blossoms. Bearded iris prefers full sun and good drainage, which is of limited supply in my garden, with a line-up of waiting candidates. But a couple of summers ago I squeezed in this exuberant and elegant lady in orange, and she has won me over!
