The ‘back 10’ of our property is a chunk of reforested pines, row upon orderly row. The planted part of my garden is crazy, cottage garden style, so it is a study in juxtaposition. Over a few years we have established walking paths in our little forest, and my beagle and I walk there every day. The forest is also home to my beginning birdhouse collection - the classic garden decoration! The rows of tall trees insulate you from sound, wind, and even moderate the temperature. The thick pine needle bed cushions your steps, and the wind rustles (or roars depending on the weather) through the pine canopy. But always there is a calm that washes over you as enter by the main path or by the secret entrance. Is the calm from the orderly rows, or the cocoon of the tall trees? Both I think.
